AWS Migration & Transfer Services

As with the use of any Cloud service there will be a need to migrate data from on premise to your chosen cloud infrastructure.  AWS Migration & Transfer services provide you with a collection of various services for the purpose of migrating content to the AWS cloud.
Below is a list of the Migration & Transfer services currently available.

AWS Migration Hub
       - The AWS Migration Hub simplifies and accelerates discovery and migration from your data centers to the AWS Cloud.  It provides a single place to discover your existing servers, plan migrations, and track the status of each application migration.  The AWS Migration Hub provides visibility into your application portfolio and streamlines planning and tracking.  You can see the status of the server and databases that make up each of the applications you are migrating regardless of which migration tool you are using.
       - AWS Migration Hub gives you a choice to start migrating right away and group servers while migration is underway, or to first discover servers and then group them into applications.  Either way, you can migrate each server in an application and track progress from each tool.  It supports migration status updates from AWS Database Migration Service, AWS Server Migration Service, ATADATA ATAmotion, CLoudEndure Live Migration, and Racemi DynaCenter.

Application Discovery Service
       - Application Discovery Service collects data about servers in your data center including system specification, performance, dependencies, and other useful information.  It helps system integrators to quickly and reliably plan application migration projects by automatically identifying applications running in on-premise data centers, their associated dependencies, and their performance profile.

Database Migration Service (DMS)
       - AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) helps you migrate databases to AWS quickly and securely.  The source database remains fully operational during migration, minimizing downtime to applications that rely on it.  It can migrate your data to and from most widely used commercial and open-source databases.
       - It can be used to migrate databases from on-prem to AWS cloud or from within AWS to other regions.

Server Migration Service (SMS)
       - AWS Server Migration Service (SMS) is an agentless service which makes it easier and faster for you to migrate thousands of on-premise workloads to AWS.  AWS SMS allows you to automate, schedule, and track incremental replications of live server volumes, making it easier for you to coordinate large-scale server migrations.
       - This has a similar function as that of DMS but is designed to target Virtual Machines instead of Databases.

Snowball
       - Snowball is a petabyte-scale data transport solution that uses secure appliance to transfer large amounts of data into and out of the AWS cloud.  Using Snowball addresses common challenges with large-scale data transfers including high network costs, long transfer times, and security concerns.  Transferring data with Snowball is simple, fast, secure and can be as little as one-fifth the cost of high speed internet.
       - With Snowball, you don't need to write any code or purchase any hardware to transfer your data.  Simply create a job in the AWS Management Console and a Snowball appliance will be shipped to you.
       - Snowball Edge is the new upgraded version of Snowball.  It includes the AWS Services in it that you can use on-prem.

AWS Transfer for SFTP
       - AWS Transfer for SFTP is a secure transfer service that stores your data in Amazon S3 and simplifies the migration of Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) workflows to AWS.

AWS DataSync
       - AWS DataSync is a data-transfer service that simplifies, and accelerates moving and replicating data between on-premises storage systems and AWS Storage services over the internet or AWS Direct Connect.

How to create an AWS free-tier account

Creating an AWS account isn't all that difficult.  This should be your 2nd step in your AWS journey.  The first being a clear familiarization of the various AWS services and their functions.  If you are not at all familiar with any of them, I would suggest you check out my previous posts which briefly discusses the various core services available in AWS then come back here to create your AWS account. When creating an AWS account you will need the following: A registered email address.   A credit card note: don't worry about fees.  creating the free tier account is totally free.  and there is a list of services that you will have free access to within their respective usage parameters.  Just be aware of these parameters as you can be charged if you go over the usage limit for the free tier account.   Now that you have the requirements available, lets begin creating your account.   First click this:  AWS Free Tier and then...

Creating a VPC - Part 1

A VPC is your very own private cloud within AWS.  Think of it as a DataCenter that you build with your own specifications and will be the place you build and deploy your cloud environment. In this article, I will teach you how to create a Custom VPC within AWS.  Please note that this is different from the default VPCs that AWS creates for you when you setup an account. What you will need: 1. An AWS account ( Creating and AWS Free Tier account ) 2. Location of your target end users 3. Number of Private and/or Public subnets required 4. A Network CIDR range of your choice depending on your requirements There are 2 ways to create VPCs. 1. Using the VPC Wizard 2. Creating VPC from scratch For demonstration purposes let us assume these requirements:  1. End users are located in the US Northern Virginia 2. You need 1 Private subnet with outbound access to the internet and 1 Public subnet 3. CIDR 10.0.0.0/16 Method 1: Creating a VPC using the VPC Wizard 1. ...

AWS AR & VR Services

The AR & VR category is all about Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality.  At the moment, there is only one service available in this category, but nevertheless is cutting edge technology. Sumerian        - Amazon Sumerian lets you create and run virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and 3D applications quickly and easily without requiring any specialized programming or 3D graphics expertise.  With Sumerian, you can build highly immersive and interactive scenes that run on popular hardware such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and iOS mobile devices (support for Android ARCore coming soon).  For example, you can build a virtual classroom that lets you train new employees around the world, or you can build a virtual environment that enables people to tour a building remotely.  Sumerian makes it easy to create all the building blocks needed to build highly immersive and interactive 3D experiences including adding objects, and designing...
